Did you know that, according to the World Health Organization, the number of people with gastric problems in Bulgaria has doubled over the past 15 years? Among the main reasons are the unhealthy, poor-quality foods we consume, stress and inappropriate eating habits. The unpleasant burning sensation occurs when gastric enzymes and acids flow back from the stomach into the oesophagus, irritating the mucous membranes. Almost everyone has experienced this sensation, and it usually passes quickly. The problem is that, when it becomes frequent, gastric juice erodes the organ linings and can cause damage leading to more serious conditions. Worsening gastro-oesophageal reflux may contribute to the development of gastric ulcers, duodenal ulcers or other significant gastric disorders.

How can we counteract heartburn?

We speak with Dr Tatiana Morokhovets, specialist in internal medicine and gastroenterology and a member of the teams at Neoclinic DCC and Fi Health Medical Centre in Sofia.

Dr Morokhovets, what causes heartburn and gastro-oesophageal reflux?

The production of gastric juices (mucus, hydrochloric acid and enzymes) is a physiological process that transforms ingested food into a form suitable for intestinal absorption. Under certain conditions, the protective capacity of the mucus layer can be compromised: through chemical attack (overproduction of gastric juices owing to disease, medicines or irritating foods such as coffee, tea and alcohol), physical attack (hot or cold food), mechanical attack (poor chewing or diagnostic endoscopy), as well as anxiety, stress and an unhealthy lifestyle (rapid or irregular eating). An insufficient mucus layer with reduced protective capacity allows irritants to come into direct contact with the gastric mucosa. This irritates the lining and is experienced as burning and pain in the epigastrium or behind the breastbone between meals. Gastric irritation may also cause flatulence, nausea or vomiting and gastro-oesophageal reflux. Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) is a condition in which the lower oesophageal sphincter – the muscle between the oesophagus and stomach – has abnormally weak tone, allowing stomach contents to flow back into the oesophagus. It presents as pain high in the epigastrium and chest, radiating to the back, often accompanied by a sore throat or dry cough. Smoking and fatty foods reduce the lower oesophageal sphincter’s ability to close once food has entered the stomach. Obesity and pregnancy are also predisposing factors for reflux.

How can we manage heartburn?

Aboacid® Gel by ABOPharma is a very good solution for heartburn and reflux.
